ABOTA Poem by Bill Cornelius

East Texas ABOTA member, Bill Cornelius, wrote a poem for their recent East Texas Spring Banquet and induction of new members.

ABOTA Poem

We consider this right to be precious and dear

For without it our freedom could well disappear

Our Founding Fathers knew this to be true

And provided a shield against tyranny for me and for you

Ordinary citizens, each one unique

Swear on an oath a just verdict to seek

We try civil cases on both sides of the “V”

Striving to do so with integrity

Protecting the right to a trial by our peers

Has been our mission for 59 years

From different backgrounds and political views

We join to preserve what still we could lose

So let us be vigilant, lest we forget

This right that we cherish remains under threat

East Texas Holds 7th Amendment Symposium

On May 3, 2013 the East Texas Chapter presented the 7th Amendment Symposium to the Chapel Hills High School AP Government classes at the Smith County District Courthouse and the US District Courthouse in Tyler, Texas.

The program, presented in conjunction with Law Day, was moderated by Jack Walker and set out the significance of the 7th Amendment and the impact of the jury trial system in the community.

Blake Bailey provided a history of the 7thAmendment. Judge Christi Kennedy, 114th Judicial District, explained the process of the state court system and handling of civil jury trials. In the afternoon, Jennifer Ainsworth and Andy Tindell discussed the distinctions between the federal and state court system. East Texas BBQ Brings Out The Stars

The East Texas chapter held quite a celebration as they inducted new members into the chapter on October 19, in Palestine, Texas.

ABOTA National President Bob Stone and his wife, Diane, came in all the way from California for the event! They not only got to sample some genuine East Texas barbecue, but some Shiner beer, as well.

TEX-ABOTA Founder, Bob Vial, drove in from Dallas to join the fun.

The barbecue was held at the beautiful, historic home of TEX-ABOTA President Jim and Karen Parsons. Entertainment was provided by the famous Gillette Brothers.

The new members were sworn in by Chief U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis. The crowd of well over 100 enjoyed a crisp, perfect evening, short speeches, great entertainment and mighty fine food.
