2012 Santa Fe CLE Roundup Speakers Named
The date is set for the annual TEX-ABOTA Santa Fe CLE Roundup, Annual Meeting and Board Meeting. It will be Thursday, June 21-Sunday, June 24, 2012.It will once again be held at the Eldorado Hotel, just steps away from the historic Santa Fe Plaza, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the best shopping and eating around.The CLE program will be on the mornings of Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23, leaving afternoons free to participate in an activity we’ll have planned, or to enjoy Santa Fe on your own terms.There will be an Opening Reception Thursday evening, June 21 and a Cocktail Party at a special location on Friday, June 22.

Charla Aldous, Dallas - Charla is a former TEX-ABOTA Trial Lawyer of the Year and a veteran of over 100 jury trials. She is consistently rated as one of the best trial lawyers in America. She has been recognized among the Top 100 attorneys in Texas, as one of the Top 50 Female Lawyers in Texas, and Texas Lawyer selected her as one of the Top 5 Personal Injury Lawyers in Texas.
Legislative Issues, David Chamberlain - Although not much of a lawyer, David has done an outstanding job as Co-Chair of TEX-ABOTA’s Legislative Committee. David will be joined by a member of the Texas Legislature to discuss legislative issues related to the civil justice system.
George Chandler, Lufkin, by way of Baylor - George is one of the most successful “country lawyers” in America. Mr. Chandler’s numerous significant jury verdicts on behalf of his clients have received nationwide attention. He is one of the most frequently requested speakers on trial tactics in the state of Texas, and throughout the nation, George has made presentations approximately 100 times at continuing legal education faculties around the country and never used a word of more than three syllables.
Professor Tiffany Dowling, Austin - Professor Dowling heads the Actual Innocence Clinic at the University of Texas. Under her direction, students investigate claims by inmates that they are actually innocent of the offenses for which they are incarcerated. Using DNA and hard work, the clinic has freed numerous men wrongfully convicted, including four inmates from Death Row. They are presently assisting several district attorneys in Texas in evaluating procedures used by law enforcement, such as photo identification of suspects, interrogation methods, and reliance on eye witness testimony.
Hon. Royal Furgeson, Dallas - After playing basketball for Texas Tech, it was suggested to Judge Furgeson that he seek another career. He wisely chose the law. After a successful career as an active trial lawyer, he was appointed by President Clinton to the federal bench in 1994. He served in Western District of Texas until 2008 and then transferred to the Northern District of Texas. He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was president of the El Paso Chapter of ABOTA.
Robert Hirschhorn, Citizen of the World - Robert is a nationally recognized expert in jury and trial consultation. He is a co-author of Blue’s Guide to Jury Selection. Juries he selected have returned over $1.0 billion in verdicts. He has also assisted lawyers in many high-profile criminal cases including: State of Florida v. William Kennedy Smith (sexual assault charges, not guilty); State v. U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (ethics charges, not-guilty); and State v. Robert Durst (acquitted of murder). He has appeared on Good Morning America, MSNBC, Court TV, CNN, Dateline NBC, 48 Hours, Nightline, and many national radio programs.
Jim Kreindler, New York City, NY - A specialist in aviation accident and terrorist litigation, Mr. Kreindler took the lead role as a member of the Plaintiffs’ Committee in the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie disaster. Jim was also a lead counsel in the Pan Am families’ suit against the Libyan government, which resulted in Omar Kadafi paying $2.7 billion in additional compensation for the victims.
Cynthia McGuinn, San Francisco, California - Cynthia has a number of jury trials which have resulted in eight figure verdicts. McGuinn was honored as the 2003 Trial Lawyer of the Year by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association and has been recognized as a “Top Woman Litigator” in California every year since 2005. She was the first woman president of the San Francisco Chapter of ABOTA. Cynthia is an author and frequent lecturer to universities and legal organizations on trial practice

Sayles, Dallas - Dick was part of a trial team that obtained a record $1.67 billion jury award in a case that Bloomberg described as the largest patent infringement verdict in U.S. history. Dick has tried numerous cases for both plaintiffs and defendants. Widely recognized as one of the leading trial lawyers in Texas, he was TEX-ABOTA’s Trial Lawyer for Half a Year.
Mikal Watts, San Antonio - Mikal is one of the most successful plaintiff attorneys in the United States. He has successfully represented individuals and businesses in all types of cases throughout the United States. He has won groundbreaking trials for individuals catastrophically injured by defective products which helped lead to recalls of dangerous products.
The CLE program will take place on Friday and Saturday mornings. The Annual Dinner and presentation of awards for Lawyer of the Year, Jurist of the Year and Champion of the 7th Amendment will be Saturday evenig. The Board meeting, at which all ABOTA members are welcomed, will be on Sunday morning.
Details will be forthcoming, but there will be an Opening Cocktail Reception, afternoon activities on Friday and Saturday and a cocktail party at the Santa Fe home of an ABOTA member.
